Cooking on a ChimeneaAlthough the principle purpose of a chimenea is to provide warmth and ambience to an outdoor area it is very possible and very enjoyable to cook a variety of foods on your chimenea. Chimeneas originated in 17th Century Mexico and were made from clay and were principally used to bake bread. Since this time, the chimenea has evolved and they are now widely available in clay and cast iron with many having a slide or swing out grill for cooking, allowing for a wider variety of cooking methods. The most common culinary use for a chimenea is basic barbecuing. Alternative Cooking MethodsAside from barbequing your chimenea can be used for more unusual cooking methods that are exciting and delicious. Clay chimeneas can be used to emulate the tandoor oven, allowing you to cook moist and flavoursome chicken, meat and even fish. It is also possible to cook directly on the coals with use of a steel sheet. There are a number of accessories that are available for cooking meats, burgers, sausages and even waffles and pies. The use of accessories will broaden the foods that you will be able to cook on your chimenea. It is even possible to convert you chimenea into a mini smoker by hanging food into the flue, allowing you to hot and cold smoke fish, meats and even cheese and veg.
